The Best Bars On Newcastle Grey Street
Grey Street is one of the most central streets in Newcastle, leading straight down from Monument – both the metro station and Grey’s Monument itself. It’s a popular street in the city for people going out for food and drinks, with many restaurants and bars striving to get a spot in this location. So which are the best bars on Newcastle Grey Street to visit for a drink or two?
This list will cover the best bars on Newcastle Grey Street, but there’s many reasons why this is one of the best areas to head to if you are going out for a few drinks in the city centre. Newcastle Theatre Royal is a key building on Grey Street, with many people going for a pre theatre meal or post theatre drinks after the performance. Read my blog on restaurants for a pre theatre meal for some early bird menu deals.
Grey Street is also where you’ll find the entrance to the old Central Arcade, a beautiful shopping corridor that dates way back. The Georgian architecture in this part of Newcastle often means Grey Street lands on many ‘prettiest streets’ lists, and the businesses that open their doors here know it’s an area people will enjoy, so have gone all out to make the most of their bars and locations.
Without further ado, here’s the best bars that line Newcastle Grey Street.
The Grey Owl
The Grey Owl is one of the newest bars to open on Grey Street, as it opened in summer 2022. They can be found on the corner next to the Theatre Royal, with an upstairs that has a private area you can reserve, downstairs and outside seating. The sister venue of the equally popular Hibou Blanc on High Bridge Street, they took over the old jeweller and created this fabulous spot. The old safe is still inside the building – the staff will show you if you want to see it.
They serve wines, beers, cocktails, as well as food, and the service is exceptional – especially if you’re in the secluded area upstairs. A great addition to the best bars on Newcastle Grey Street and one that will only get more popular over time.
At the moment you can’t book a table at the Grey Owl, it’s walk in only, but if you’d like to enquire about the private area it’s worth giving them a call.
Follow the Grey Owl on Instagram for updates.
Bar Luga
Bar Luga has been on Newcastle Grey Street for as long as I can remember, but it was always very much a slightly older crowd, or people having a drink after work. Their outside terrace changed the game for Bar Luga, as it’s absolutely stunning and a brilliant addition to their offering.
The Bar Luga terrace is like a totally different bar to the rest of it downstairs, and it’s open year round with big umbrellas that act as either rain or sun protection. They also have plenty of heaters, so it really is an all weather terrace that’s a suntrap in summer, and a cosy festive spot in winter.
The drinks menu is very good, with local gins, a good selection of wines, and a long cocktail list that you can choose from too. The staff are very good, and will let you know when you don’t have long left of your reservation, as well as if you can keep the table longer.
Booking is also very efficient, as you can specify if you want to visit for just drinks or food as well. They really keep to the schedule because it’s so popular, so don’t assume you’ll be able to just walk in or keep your table for longer. Consider this when you’re booking to avoid being disappointed.
One of the best bars on Grey Street without a doubt. Visit the Bar Luga website to book your table.
All Bar One
It may be part of a chain but All Bar One Newcastle is a great bar that everyone can enjoy. It’s big enough to cater for everyone, with a huge range of seating including high copper bar tables, smaller more secluded tables for two in the window, big central booths for two, and a mix of tables for dining too.
Their menu is pretty extensive, with a range of draught beers and ciders, a good wine selection and an excellent cocktail menu that often has seasonal creations thrown in too. It’s an ideal bar for any time of day, whether it’s a lunchtime start, an after work drink, or part of a bigger night out.
You can even sit and order directly to your table without ever having to go to the bar through their app. Find more information including menus and how to book on the All Bar One Newcastle website.
Dacantus
A Spanish style gin bar, Dacantus have over 90 gins on their extensive menu, and each one has been paired up with the most well suited tonic and botanicals to give unique and fabulous gin cocktail creations. The staff are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to gin, so if you’d like a recommendation or are unsure then have a chat with them.
The bar itself is a small number of high tables and stools, with some outside seating on the pavement. They’re on the side of Grey Street that gets the sun too. They do serve food, including nibbles, small plates and tapas style dishes to go with your gin goblets.

Leila Lily’s
An elegant, and very beautiful bar at the bottom of Grey Street, Leila Lily’s is refined as both a bar and a restaurant. It’s not the cheapest, but the food is excellent and can be enjoyed inside in the restaurant area, or outside on their sheltered terrace.
The bar area is beautiful and pink, with plush furniture, and a floral theme throughout the whole bar. It is this theme that inspires many of the cocktails on the menu too, they definitely get creative. The classics are all available too, and the bar staff are very good at taking requests and making them how you like them. Highly recommend the vanilla espresso martini.
As well as the normal restaurant menu they have brunch options, a lunch menu, and you can also get afternoon tea. They have private dining options inside and in their outdoor igloo. It’s a great bar to go with the girls, or for date night.

Nitehawks
People rave about the cocktails at Nitehawks, a pretty small bar that’s part of the Theatre Royal building. They have a small outdoor terrace to give them a bit more space, but as mentioned the cocktails are what draw people in. It may not be as big or glamorous as some of the other bars on Grey Street, but the staff are very knowledgeable and skilled when it comes to making drinks. A good alternative bar to try.
They’re open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3pm, and Friday – Sundays from midday. Visit the Nitehawks website for further information, photos and testimonials from happy customers.
Harry’s Bar
I can’t have a list of bars on Grey Street without mentioning Harry’s, it’s one of the longest standing bars in Newcastle, and it’s Alan Shearer’s favourite. A lively, big bar with plenty of seating and an outside area, Harry’s is popular by people of all ages.
With this selection of the best bars on Newcastle Grey Street, you don’t even need to venture off the street to have a full afternoon or night out. They all bring something different to the table in terms of atmosphere and style, but the one thing they do have in common is great service and great drinks.
