Where To Enjoy The Best Sushi In Newcastle
If you’re a Japanese food fan and particularly sushi, Newcastle has plenty of places from which you can get it. There are Japanese or Pan Asian restaurants where it features on the menu, as well as stand along sushi spots that serve nothing else. Here’s where to enjoy the best sushi in Newcastle.
We’ve got everything from sushi restaurants, the best for takeaway, where to go for girls night sushi and cocktails, and more.
The Best Restaurant Sushi in Newcastle
The Muddler on Grey Street is without a doubt the best restaurant for sushi in Newcastle. Find it on Grey Street where the quite small location has recently expanded into another room next door, complete with outdoor terrace too.
The sushi here is just incredible, and it has a big menu including special Uramaki sushi rolls that come as either 4 or 8 pieces. Some of the most tasty include the Dynamite Roll which is tempura prawn, and Active Volcano with spicy tuna. These are just two favourites but there are many more, as well as sashimi, maki and nigiri options.
The service can sometimes be a tad slow, because they make it all so fresh and honestly you won’t mind when it arrives. Use the time to try some of the cocktails on their drinks menu or a bottle of wine for a leisurely meal. The menu also features other Asian dishes, so it’s a good one if you want really good sushi but others in your party don’t.
The Muddler is also really good value for money, the bill often comes to a lot less than you might expect compared to some other places. If you want to visit The Muddler make sure you book a table, it’s not the biggest and it’s very popular so it books up fast.

The Best Casual Sushi
Sushi Me Rollin’ began with two mates who took up a spot in Stack when it was in the centre of Newcastle, but after a few years their popularity expanded beyond the container community and they got their own premises on Grey Street. This meant they weren’t tied to Stack’s alcohol rules or visitors, and could run the sushi show on their own terms.
The sushi is all hand crafted on site, and they have some great creations like the Prawn Star, the Big Oppa-tuna-ty, and The Attenborough to name a few. All they serve is sushi, and it’s served on a big platter together with all the sides – soy, ginger, wasabi etc.
The restaurant itself is small, with maybe 8 tables max, and they don’t take bookings so it’s walk in only. People will wait and queue outside especially on busy evenings. It’s that good. A good one if you want to pop in on the fly or after shopping. They also do takeaway, and have another location in Whitley Bay.

The Best Sushi for Girls Night
Geisha is one of the best newer restaurants in Newcastle, and it’s just outside the city centre in Sandyford. It became popular very quickly thanks to the varied menu, big portions, fabulous cocktails and great atmosphere.
Sushi wasn’t originally on the menu, but after a lot of feedback and taking the time to get it right they added it in early 2022. They have some beautiful sushi creations, and cater for vegans as well.
Have a read of my review of Geisha, and my follow up post on the sushi at Geisha for more information.
The Best Sushi on the Quayside
If Aveika was in the centre of Newcastle it would rival Muddler for being the best, but instead I’ll include it as the best sushi on the Newcastle Quayside. Another Pan Asian restaurant and lively bar, Aveika sushi is also exceptional.
Being a bigger restaurant the menu follows suit, with fifteen Uramaki sushi rolls to choose from, as well as sashimi, maki and nigiri, and bigger platters. The Uramaki rolls come in just 4 pieces, and they are slightly more expensive, but they are worth it – fresh, chunky and beautifully presented.
Being a late bar as well as a restaurant, it can be loud, lively and have the music blasting depending on which night of the week you’re visiting, so be prepared for that. The drinks menu is therefore extensive, and the cocktails are well worth a try. It’s in a great spot just by the Tyne Bridge if you’re wanting to enjoy the sights of the quayside too.

The Best Takeaway Sushi
Although Sushi Me Rollin does takeaway, I find that Nudo is the best takeaway sushi in Newcastle. Although it’s pre packaged it is still made fresh daily, and they do amazing poke sushi bowls which are my personal favourite. The value here is excellent, it’s a lot cheaper without compromising on quality.
There are three Nudo stores in Newcastle, two in the centre at Haymarket and Monument, and one in Jesmond on Acorn Road.

Other Sushi in Newcastle to mention…
St Sushi is up there as a good sushi restaurant, and you can find it on Westgate Road. I’d probably visit more if it was in a different location, but nevertheless the sushi is great. Of course there is a Yo! Sushi in Newcastle, and you can find it on Grainger Street, and Umai Mi can be found in Eldon Square. Two of Newcastle’s teppanyaki restaurants also have sushi on the menu – Hana Hana and Fujiyama.
There is plenty of choice for sushi in Newcastle, but the above places are what I would class as the best, depending on what you’re looking for and when you are visiting.
