Making your own Christmas wreath for the front door or to hang as a decoration inside your home is a big part of Christmas tradition and fun. Maybe you’re crafty, maybe you want to learn how to be, or maybe you just want a festive activity to enjoy with friends or family. There are a lot of Christmas wreath making workshops in Newcastle and the North East for 2024.

As most people want their decorations up at the end of November or start of December, a lot of Christmas wreath making events in Newcastle are pretty early, so I learned from my mistakes last year and I’m sharing this earlier than ever as some are getting booked up already.

If you’re looking to add a personal touch to your holiday decor either as a seasoned crafter or a complete beginner, these workshops do offer a fun, creative way to embrace the Christmas spirit.

I find that it’s quite an expensive activity, as you’re paying for time and expertise of the florist/gardener or specialist, as well as some of the extras that they come with. These Christmas wreath making workshops across the North East vary in price and extravagance, so pick one that best suits you and enjoy.

Newcastle Cathedral

Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens near Morpeth are beautiful at this time of year and it’s a gorgeous setting to enjoy before or after your wreath making session. Join the festive fun at Belsay Hall’s wreath-making workshop, where you’ll have access to fresh seasonal foliage and expert instruction, and get a hot drink and Christmas treat.

Wreath Workshop at Middleton Lodge, North Yorkshire

Middleton Lodge near Richmond, North Yorkshire are hosting a wreath making evening with Kirsty from The Wilde at Middleton Lodge’s beautiful Fig House. This really is a beautiful venue, and is magical at Christmas. While working on your masterpiece, enjoy festive treats like homemade mince pies, hot chocolate, and mulled wine. For those wanting a pre-workshop meal, the Coach House restaurant will be open for lunch.

The Willows at the Woodmans

Get into the festive spirit at The Willows’ Luxury Christmas Wreath workshop, part of the Woodman’s Arms. With guidance from one of the North East’s leading florists, Jasmine & Pear Flowers, you’ll create a beautiful wreath while enjoying festive canapés and a glass of fizz or mulled wine.

Wallington Hall Wreath Making, Northumberland

A North East National Trust favourite, Wallington Hall are offering create your own wreath sessions with their Head Gardener. With a full demonstration and all materials provided, you’ll have the opportunity to make a truly personal creation. They encourage you to bring any of your own personal items to add to your wreath for a more bespoke design if you want to. Wallington Hall is always so festive I’d be looking at this one if I thought I could do it, and you get coffee or tea included.

Winter Wreath Making at Bradley Gardens, Wylam

Bradley Gardens is such a lovely venue, combining a garden shop with homeware and lifestyle stores and their Glasshouse cafe and restaurant. They’re holding winter wreath making workshops from 28th November – 1st December, at £85pp including refreshments. Call them for timings and to book on 01661 852 176.

Matfen Hall Wreath Masterclasses

I went to Matfen Hall for the first time last year following its extensive refurbishment and it is an absolutely beautiful venue, a real luxury hotel. It also felt pretty special when I visit over Christmas time with all the decorations. They’re hosting a luxury wreath making masterclass, with Kate from Northumbrian Flowers.

This years experience includes a festive Afternoon Tea in the grand Drawing Room after you’ve made you wreath, with mulled wine and mince pies. It’s one of the more expensive ones reflecting the venue, but it would be a special way to kick off the festive season.

The Common Room Newcastle & The Flower Folk

Hosted by The Flower Folk (florist based in Jesmond), this workshop at The Common Room in Newcastle promises a cosy morning of wreath making in one of Newcastle’s old heritage buildings. In this beautiful old venue enjoy mulled wine and mince pies while you create your unique wreath with expert guidance.

Meet Me On The Corner, Whitley Bay

A very popular cafe in Whitley Bay, Meet Me On The Corner are hosting four wreath making classes this year, which you can enjoy with a mini food platter and festive cocktails and drinks on offer too.

South Causey Inn, County Durham

South Causey Inn, in County Durham do Christmas very well, with a huge program of events throughout the festive season. Their Chrsitmas wreath workshops are part of it, with over ten dates to choose from through November and December. Craft a 16-inch wreath guided by a trained florist using fresh, natural materials. Kick off the workshop with a festive drink, either a Bucks Fizz or an mocktail, and get in the South Causey Christmas spirit as you create a beautiful wreath to hang on your door.

I think Christmas at Raby Castle is going to be even more magical than usual this year, after their new development ‘The Rising’ opened this summer. The gift shop is the shop of dreams. If you’re going to book here note that they ask everyone to bring their own secateurs and gardening gloves.

The Mill House, Birtley

The Mill House are hosting a cosy evening of festive creativity with their Luxury Christmas Wreath Making Workshop on Monday, 2nd December. Theyre holding it in the snug by the fire, and in partnership with the talented florists at Nomad Flower Den. During the 90-minute session, you’ll be guided step by step in creating your perfect wreath, followed by a meal from their small plates menu. The Tempus, Charlton Hall

The Tempus Hotel on the Charlton Hall Estate is a gorgeous venue near Alnwick, and they have a Tipi in the grounds which is undergoing a transformation for winter. It’s where they’ll be hosting their wreath making workshops this year, which you can enjoy with mulled wine and led by ‘The Whole Schbang’ team.
