Corner House Loft Mevagissey With Aspects Holidays
My second accommodation as part of my week long trip to Cornwall this spring was in Mevagissey, this time a southern coastal town so a different area to stay and explore. Like Cider Barn, Corner House Loft is managed through Aspects Holidays, experts in Cornwall self-catering rentals. Although I’d never previously been to Cornwall, I’d heard a lot of stories about this particular town from my parents, and it’s one I was looking forward to a lot!
My accommodation in Cornwall was provided by Aspects Holidays for the purposes of this review. Everything I did there was planned and paid for myself.
On checking out of Cider Barn mid way through the week, we revisit Padstow for the last time to pick up a lot of souvenirs – a great little town filled with shops of gifts to buy. Following this we went for a beach walk at Harlyn Bay, and then a delicious lunch at The Lobster Shed, which is part of the Pig Hotel at Harlyn Bay.
As much as I love hotel stays, I really think self-catering is the way to enjoy Cornwall for an extended period of time, especially if you’ve travelled the length of the country to get there. You can really make yourself feel right at home. After such a lovely stay at Cider Barn I had high hopes for Mevagissey too.
Arriving at Mevagissey, Cornwall
The main difference when arriving in Mevagissey compared to Port Isaac was that this stay was right in the centre of the town. As the name suggests, ‘Corner House Loft’ is an apartment not a cottage, and I’d therefore been sent detailed instructions on where to park and the one way system around the town.
Corner House Loft comes with a parking permit for the main car park in Mevagissey, which you show to the parking attendant and he provides you with a parking slip for the duration of your stay. He was so welcoming and when I told him where I was staying he mentioned how fabulous it is. Clearly like Tynemouth and Whitley Bay where I’m from, the local community is strong and everyone knows each other.
He gave me some helpful information about how to unload the car close to the entrance of the apartment, and kept a space for me when I returned to leave the car. It is only a few minutes walk, but I was on my own so pulled up right outside to unload.
Check In at Mevagissey
Corner House Loft is actually located above the Aspects Holidays office in central Mevagissey, right opposite the Ship Inn. The entrance is tucked away and the staircase is hidden inside a private fenced area. It’s self check-in with a key safe, and was really easy with the detailed instructions sent beforehand.
There was another lovely welcome with a Cornish tea set up on the counter, with local scones, tea bags, cream and jam, as well as all the local information and the parking permit. I got all my bags inside and then time for a look around.
Corner House Loft Tour
Wow! This apartment is absolutely stunning, and I couldn’t believe how big it was, you definitely wouldn’t have thought it from outside. It sleeps two, but it had so much space, especially downstairs.
The door opens into the kitchen, which has a big kitchen island and seating in the middle, as well as everything you’d need for a self catered stay – and even a wine fridge. It’s bright, airy and beautiful.
In this same area there is a sofa, a sit down table for two, and a desk area if you needed to do any work. Ceilings are high with big wooden beams, and the open plan through to the living area just felt so much bigger than it looked.
Under the stairs there was a dog bed, towel and bowls laid out for Arthur, so he was straight in there and enjoyed running around. The enclosed private space outside was also ideal for him as he couldn’t escape, and when the sun was out the little terrace with seating was a total suntrap. Perfect in summer!
The living area had two big squishy sofas, a modern fireplace, lots of books and a big TV. Like Cider Barn, it felt homely but modern, and you could instantly relax and enjoy the whole space. I found that I was really ready to not be driving anywhere after doing a lot of it for the first part of the week, so I was excited to be so central.
Upstairs is the bedroom, with an enormous bed and so many pillows, and a beautiful bathroom with a feature tub and double shower. You could control the lighting to different settings, and it had plenty plugs, storage, a big mirror and everything you’d need on hand. It’s been decorated extremely well, and I felt like I was in the lap of luxury.
Benefits of Corner House Loft in Mevagissey
It’s really hard to choose a favourite place between Cider Barn and the Corner House Loft, but after a busy start to the week and a lot of driving to explore as much of the region as I could, I decided that my time in Mevagissey was going to be a lot slower. The forecast was much brighter too so it may be a combination of things that affects this, but I think the Corner House Loft just edged it for me.
It was so nice to unload the car, park up and forget about it for the last couple of days and base myself in this gorgeous little town. I’d quickly realised that every place you go to in Cornwall is stunning, so I knew I’d have to return in the future anyway, and I didn’t want to overdo it during my first trip trying to cram too much in.
The decision was made to really make the most of my time in Mevagissey, and the Corner House Loft made this so easy because of how central it was. Although it wasn’t right on the harbour front which did get busy, it was only a 3 minute walk away – from everything actually!
This was ideal for me and Arthur, we went out to explore on our first evening and there was definitely more going on later on than there had been in Port Isaac where a lot closed at 4-5pm. I spotted lots of cafes, boutique little shops, restaurants and food places all within a few minutes walk so we were spoiled for choice. I think this really sealed the decision to spend more time here.
Knowing we didn’t have to rush, I actually spent the first evening in the apartment, reading, with a glass of wine, and again unwinding after the drive in the beautiful tub. Having these luxuries in both places I stayed really made such a difference. I had the best nights sleep of the entire week that first night here.
The remainder of my time in Mevagissey was a dream, and as mentioned this was definitely due to the central location of the apartment. It made my life so much easier with Arthur who likes frequent naps, and it meant I could be a lot more spontaneous rather than have to plan everything and book tables everywhere.
I also popped in to the Aspects Holidays office underneath, and had a lovely chat with the ladies in there who were so helpful, offering recommendations, coastal walks and were telling me about other stunning dog friendly properties they manage in the area. It was nice to know they were so close if I needed anything and they were very happy to help and chat about the town.
I took their advice on the Friday, which was the best day for weather. After breakfast outside by the harbour from She Sells Cafe, we walked around and up onto the coastal path. We didn’t go too far but there are coves and beaches within walking distance so the car just wasn’t needed at all. By the time we came back little harbourside food vans and shacks were opening serving sandwiches, loaded fries and all sorts of seafood delights. It was every bit the quaint seaside town you’d hope to experience in summer.
Corner House Loft, Mevagissey is again another place I’d happily stay again without a doubt, and I’d even go as far as saying I probably will book here for my next trip to Cornwall.
Every June in Mevagissey they have Feast Week, with lots of food stalls and music on the harbour: Mevagissey Feast Week – celebrating since 1754. I would love to go back for this but sadly my June is so busy – perhaps I’ll target this for next year!
There were so many places I didn’t get to that Mevagissey would be a great base for, and the apartment was perfect. If you’re interested in booking a stay for yourself, you can find more details on Corner House Loft with Aspects Holidays here.
