If you’re visiting Newcastle by train, and need somewhere to go for food or a drink on arrival or before you leave, here’s the places to eat near Newcastle Train Station.
All of these are within very easy walking distance, even if you have luggage with you. Being right in the city centre means you’re spoiled for choice with a range of options, including fast food, pub food, cafes and proper restaurants.
Restaurants Near Newcastle Train Station
If you’re wanting a proper sit down meal these are the nearest restaurants to head to near the station.
Central Shaker
Directly opposite the station is the Hilton hotel, and underneath is Central Shaker bar and restaurant. It’s a pizza place mainly, with a good selection of various toppings and make your own options, and they also serve pasta dishes, small plates and sharer boards. They’re known for their cocktails, with lots of fancy creations that you can get on offer at 2 for £10. You can book tables but it’s a good one to walk in as well. They’re open from 11am – midnight, or 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
See more on Central Shaker here.
The Hudson
The bar and restaurant in the County Hotel also just opposite the station is The Hudson, taking its name from George Hudson, a key figure in the 19th century for Northern Railway. The inside of The Hudson is lovely, with a big bar area to enjoy a drink, and one of their many cocktails or a glass of wine.
Through in the restaurant the style is reflective of old fashioned railway carriages, with big plush booths, private dining spaces and draped windows. They have an outside terrace which gets the sun through the day, but this particular bit of town gets a lot of through traffic so it’s not exactly peaceful!
Open from 10am until late, you can enjoy all meals of the day here, including a bottomless brunch, or just enjoy the bar for drinks. See more on The Hudson here.
The French Quarter
A fabulous French restaurant under the railway bridge arches, the French Quarter is as beautiful as the food is delicious. Run by a couple – Cedric from France and his wife Catherine from Northumberland, they brought their love of French food to Newcastle. Serving traditional French dishes for lunch and dinner, along with a big selection of French wine it’s a popular spot that requires advance booking if you’d like to visit.
They also sell many of their products – olives, wine, cheese, chutneys, coffee and more in their deli style section. You can make these into hampers as well. View the French Quarter menus online here.
Satchins
Satchins is one of the best Indian restaurants in Newcastle, and you can find it behind Central Station on Forth Banks. It’s been there and run by the same person for over 20 years, with many repeat customers due to the quality and authenticity of the food.
Make sure you book if you want to visit – here’s the Satchins website.
Coop Chicken House
Coop Chicken House is on Collingwood street, and they serve grilled chicken obviously, burgers and chicken wings. I’m sure they were thrilled when Nandos opened right opposite not too long ago!

It has real character to it, and an atmosphere that is often added to with live music. There is a small urban courtyard upstairs too which gets busy on summer nights. They serve delicious pub food, and a range of drinks. In the winter it’s a cosy one with open fires. A really good pub in the centre of Newcastle.

On Collingwood Street head to The Camera Shop cafe, they serve breakfast and coffee from 7am, and they do sandwiches, wraps and other light bites throughout the day.
