The Flower Cafe, Newcastle
Don’t let the big pink flower garland or neon sign on the wall give you a predetermined impression of the Flower Cafe on Grainger Street in Newcastle. They opened within the last year and although it took me a good few months to venture in, it was worth the wait.
You can’t miss it on Grainger Street, it’s just seconds from Monument metro and right opposite Urban Outfitters. They have outside seating which will be lovely in the summer, but plenty of tables inside too, both upstairs and downstairs. They’re also dog friendly.
The cafe itself is done out beautifully, very modern with deep pinks and turquoise, mirrored walls and plush seating on both bench seats in the windows and chairs dotted around. There really is a lot of seating inside, with tables for 2 or more people, and even more downstairs you shouldn’t struggle for a table even over lunch.
The counter serves up cakes and takeaways, but it is table service if you’re eating in, so find yourself a seat and get comfortable.
The Flower Cafe Menu
The menus are varied with plenty of choice, especially for coffee they have all the usual and then some really different ones. I ordered one of the Botanical superfood coffees, the one called Butterfly with no idea what to expect and it arrived blue.
It was really tasty though, made with oat milk. There were a few others including a pink one and an orange Tumeric one, and a selection of iced coffees too. They also serve smoothies, soft drinks, organic wine, beers, and beautiful looking cocktails creations also very floral based.
Food wise, you could get breakfast which had options such as loaded croissants, pain au chocolats and pastries, scones and toasted teacakes, granola bowls and toasted sourdough.
If you’re just after something sweet to go with your coffee they had a full cake counter with all sorts of choices, brownies and blondies, cookies, and traditional Baklava which I know people go mad over. There are gluten free and vegan options across the menu too.
Other food dishes included cold sandwiches which vary on the counter, or one of their signature toasted sandwiches, of which there are loads of choices included brie and onion, sundried tomato and pesto, and then some really fun creations including the New York Style – beef pastrami, chicken, mustard mayo, cheese, pickles and caramelised onion.
I originally only went in for a coffee but on seeing other people with toasties I had to order one myself. It arrived beautifully presented, and it was delicious.
There was a total mix of people coming in over lunch, some people meeting with friends for coffee, people on their own with their laptop, and some groups of all ages enjoying lunch or a couple of cocktails. It would be really nice to sit outside in the summer too.
Staff were lovely, they brought Arthur a bowl of water, and were happy to provide recommendations for drinks and food choices if you asked. It was really reasonably priced as well, I think my bill was no more than £15 for a super food coffee, an iced latte and my New York style toasted sandwich.
I think sometimes cafes with all the flower decor and neon signs can give off a certain impression, so I’m pleased to say it wasn’t novelty at all. Most importantly for anywhere you want to visit for a coffee, somewhere to work, or enjoy with friends, the Flower Cafe serve up really good food and drinks in a lovely environment in the centre of Newcastle.
Follow the Flower Cafe on Instagram here to see all their latest creations. You can’t book a table but there were plenty of tables even if it’s busy you shouldn’t have to wait too long.
